South Pacific (2001 Television Soundtrack) : This soundtrack captures the March 2001 ABC-TV production of South Pacific, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s musical of passion, danger, and racial intolerance in the Pacific islands during World War II, based on James Michener’s book. Somewhat … mature for the role of Nellie Forbush (the spunky naval nurse made famous by Mary Martin in the original Broadway cast), Glenn Close proves an adequate singer in her renditions of “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “A Wonderful Guy.”

In the men’s roles, Rade Sherbedgia’s voice lacks sufficient richness for Emile de Becque’s ballads “Some Enchanted Evening” and “This Nearly Was Mine,” while as Lt. Joe Cable, jazz-pianist-turned-crooner-turned-actor Harry Connick Jr. makes “Younger Than Springtime” suave rather than wide-eyed. Robert Pastorelli and Lori Tan Chinn are fine as Billis and Bloody Mary, respectively, and the grandly romantic score is mostly intact, missing “Happy Talk” but adding a bonus track of Connick and Close singing “My Girl Back Home,” which was cut from the original production, restored for the 1958 film, and cut again for this production. If you enjoyed the television film, this might be a useful souvenir, but serious fans of the score can stick to the original Broadway cast or the complete two-disc recording from JAY. –David Horiuchi Skip It!! – Tom George – Wash. A total waste. Glenn Close was too old, the rest of the cast dull. The one exception is Harry Connick who was ideally cast as Lt. Cable. Even There Is Nothin Like A Dame is wrong, it sounds like boys in a club in Chelsea rather than the rough and tough Seabees and Sailors they are meant to be. Forget it, the entire film is dreary and unmoving and just plain wrong! Get the Carnegie Hall concert version with Reba. THAT is a masterpiece of a performance, and does true justice to this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.

Thoughts after almost 3 years of ownership – etherised – los angeles, ca usa
first off, a little background: i purchased this item in october of 2006. during that time, it’s been used probably about once a week, on average. my floor used to be fully carpeted, but that has since been removed and is now mostly hardwood with a large rug in the living room. i also have a constantly shedding dog.

on carpets or rugs, this thing is amazing. i hate to use lofty terms like “unparalleled,” but it’s hard to imagine a vacuum that would do a better job. on carpet.

on hardwood it’s a different story. the main problem is that the exhaust (at least partially) is in front of the vacuum– meaning that as you move the vacuum across the floor, it blows the stuff i’m trying to pick up away from the path of the vacuum. it’s not fun chasing that cluster of doghair around, and about 10 minutes after i’m done the dust that the vacuum kicked up starts to settle and i realized i haven’t really accomplished much. i’ve taken to using a swiffer mop clean the hardwood and using the vacuum only on the rug.

after about 2 years, i noticed that the canister no longer forms a tight seal. i think i’m losing at least 50% of the original suction because of this. needless to say, it’s no longer the Animal it once was. i’m debating whether to have it serviced at expense or to just throw it away.

bottom line, on carpet this machine rocks– 5 stars. on bare floors, quite the opposite, 1 star. thus the 3 star rating. not really sure if the canister seal is a common problem or if i just got unlucky (i really wish that refurbished items came with a note detailing the nature of the original defect), but it’s something that you might want to keep in mind. it wasn’t cheap to purchase, i don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect more than 3 years of use.
